Partner Institutions

Partner institutions of this project are Institute of Experimental Medicine AS CR, v. v. i. and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway.

The promoter of this project is the Institute of Experimental Medicine AS CR (IEM), which is the leading institution in the Czech Republic specialized in biomedicine, particularly in the fields of neurobiology, neurophysiology, stem cell research and nervous system regeneration. In recent years, the Institute has been chosen as an EU Centre of Excellence (MEDIPRA). In the long term, IEM has been regularly involved in major international projects. Studying the use of different types of stem cells, biomaterials and tissue engineering in the treatment of experimental models of spinal cord injury or stroke led to collaborations in particular in the programs of the EU Framework projects (STEMS, RESCUE, ANGIOTARGETING, AXREGEN). Such cooperations continued even after the projects were completed: with INSERM (France), Kings College London (UK), Cambridge University (UK) and New York Medical College (USA) and resulted in important findings in the field of regenerative medicine, which were published in recognized foreign journals.

The partner institution of this project, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), is one of the key academic institutions in Norway. NTNU is involved in a number of significant international colaborations and focuses primarily on technology innovation and interdisciplinary approach. The University works closely with the St. Olav's University Hospital in Trondheim and SINTEF, the largest independent scientific organization in Norway.

NTNU provides well-equipped laboratories and support for a number of innovative projects such as NanoLab - strategic initiative in collaboration with SINTEF, connecting different faculties and aiming to coordinate and improve research in the field of neuroscience and nanotechnology at NTNU. NTNU NanoLab program is one of three projects of this type worldwide. NTNU is associated with a range of important research projects and Centers of Excellence, such as the Kavli Institute of Systemic Neuroscience, Center for Neural Computation under the direction of Nobel prize winners May-Britt and Edvard Moser, and the Norwegian National Advisory Unit for Functional MRI. Finally, the current project is well-aligned with NTNU’s Biotechnology programme and the relevant activities in the Tissue Engineering and Morphogenetic Engineering R&D Streams.
